Slingshot Insurance, an AI-native embedded insurance startup, is officially emerging from stealth mode, announcing an impressive $27 million in seed funding to revolutionize the distribution and underwriting of micro-policies often encountered at checkout. This significant capital injection positions Slingshot to tackle a vast, yet largely underserved, segment of the insurance market, focusing on the seamless integration of coverage into everyday transactions, especially within the burgeoning vertical SaaS ecosystem. The company aims to make small, contextual insurance policies not just accessible, but also economically viable for businesses and beneficial for consumers.
The seed round was co-led by two prominent entities: Rally Ventures, a venture capital firm known for its strategic investments in early-stage technology companies, and Skyward Group, an organization deeply embedded in the insurance industry. This dual leadership underscores both the technological innovation and the deep industry expertise backing Slingshot’s audacious vision. The funding round also saw participation from a syndicate of seasoned insurance industry veterans, including Jim Hays, whose extensive experience will be a valuable asset as he joins Slingshot’s board of directors. Notably, Rally Ventures isn’t just an investor; it’s also a co-founder of the Minneapolis-based startup, reflecting a unique, hands-on approach the firm has adopted for roughly eight of its portfolio companies, some already launched, others still operating in stealth. This strategic co-founding model allows Rally to leverage its deep operational insights and network from the very inception of a company.
At the helm of Slingshot is Ethan Genteman, a first-time founder and CEO, whose background is rooted in actuarial science and data leadership within the insurance sector. Genteman’s vision for Slingshot is to capitalize on the growing trend of embedded insurance, where coverage is offered precisely when and where a customer needs it – think travel insurance offered during flight booking, or product protection during an online purchase. Slingshot’s core innovation lies in its AI-powered software platform, designed to facilitate this embedded model by seamlessly connecting businesses (like vertical SaaS providers) with insurance carriers that underwrite the policies. The platform’s advanced AI capabilities are engineered to process, analyze, and share data efficiently between these parties, drastically reducing the manual administrative burden that traditionally makes inexpensive, small-premium policies costly and cumbersome to offer.
The challenge Slingshot addresses is profound: while consumers increasingly desire contextual, convenient insurance, the economics of small policies (averaging around $25, as cited by Slingshot’s first customer) often make them unprofitable for traditional insurers. Each policy, regardless of its premium size, typically involves a similar level of administrative overhead, including underwriting, claims processing, regulatory compliance, and data management. When premiums are low, these fixed costs quickly erode any potential profit margins, rendering such programs unattractive to incumbent carriers. Genteman illustrates this with a hypothetical example: a program collecting $500,000 in premiums with a mere 10% margin yields only $50,000 in profit. "That’s not a viable program for the way incumbent carriers have set themselves up operationally," he explained.
Slingshot’s solution is to replace the antiquated systems – spreadsheets, endless emails, and disconnected databases – with a unified, intelligent software platform. This platform directly links policy distributors with insurers, automating data-heavy tasks, streamlining workflows, and maintaining a transparent, auditable record of all decisions. The AI engine at its core can perform tasks like automated underwriting, personalized risk assessment, efficient claims routing, and real-time compliance checks, all of which contribute to a significant reduction in operational costs. By leveraging AI, Slingshot aims to transform these traditionally low-margin policies into profitable ventures, unlocking new revenue streams for businesses and expanding access to relevant insurance products for consumers.
The startup has already secured its first customer and design partner in Vertical Insure, a company that serves over 750,000 customers with an average premium of $25. This partnership is highly strategic, as Vertical Insure’s existing operational challenges directly informed the development of Slingshot’s product. Vertical Insure, which uses software platforms to sell insurance, often found itself unable to introduce new products quickly due to the technological and process limitations of traditional insurers. "We can design the products our customers need almost overnight, but the industry is highly regulated, and we need delegated authority just to write and distribute what we’ve built," stated Brock Noland, co-founder and CEO of Vertical Insure, who is also a co-founder of Slingshot. "The antiquated approval process on the carrier-side slows everything down." Even after identifying an insurer willing to back a product, the process of integrating disparate systems could cause further delays. Slingshot was specifically designed to resolve these bottlenecks, with its inaugural program slated for launch this month.

Initially, Slingshot will generate revenue as a technology provider, charging a 5% technology fee to administer programs through its platform. However, the six-person company, which formally commenced operations on July 1, has a more ambitious long-term strategy: it is actively pursuing an acquisition that would enable it to become a full-stack insurer, capable of backing policies itself. "We’re not a carrier yet, but we are rapidly closing on our carrier," Genteman confirmed. This move would be a game-changer, granting Slingshot greater control over underwriting, faster product development cycles, enhanced profitability by capturing more of the value chain, and direct relationships with regulatory bodies, ultimately accelerating its mission to redefine embedded insurance.
Genteman sees a massive, largely untapped opportunity in vertical SaaS companies – businesses that develop specialized software for specific industries. These companies, increasingly seeking to diversify revenue beyond traditional subscription models, are perfectly positioned to offer embedded insurance. They already possess deep insights into their customers’ needs, transactional data, and the context of their purchases. For example, a youth sports platform could offer a $25 policy covering cancellation or injury when a parent signs up their child for a $2,000 volleyball league. Other hypothetical applications include a babysitting platform offering coverage for last-minute cancellations, a pet boarding facility providing insurance for unexpected vet bills, or an equipment rental platform allowing customers to add protection against accidental damage or theft at checkout.
"The challenge is that the insurance and regulatory landscape is incredibly complex, and most SaaS companies don’t have the expertise, industry relationships or understanding of where to begin," Genteman noted. Slingshot aims to provide a "white-glove service" for these vertical SaaS companies, guiding them from an initial insurance product idea to a fully operational offering. This holistic approach includes providing the necessary software, navigating the intricate regulatory environment, and ultimately facilitating the seamless integration of insurance into their existing customer journeys. "Insurance becomes another product that can be offered naturally within the existing customer experience," he added, emphasizing the value proposition for both the businesses and their end-users.
Justin Kaufenberg, managing director at Rally Ventures, brings a unique perspective to this opportunity. Before joining Rally, he led SportsEngine, a vertical SaaS company where embedded insurance became a crucial revenue stream. "That experience gave me firsthand insight into the opportunity for software companies to generate revenue through embedded financial products," Kaufenberg shared via email. He observes a similar potential across Rally’s diverse portfolio, where many companies combine AI products with financial services. Kaufenberg highlights a growing demand among founders for insurance partners who can facilitate the rapid introduction of coverage. Rally’s decision to co-found Slingshot was driven by the desire to integrate insurance backing, underwriting, reporting, claims handling, and distribution into a single, cohesive business. "To get the carrier, the reinsurance, the underwriting platform, the data flow engine, the reporting capabilities, the claims handling, the embedded distribution engine, and every other part of the offering from a single vendor is unheard of," Kaufenberg asserted, underscoring Slingshot’s unique, comprehensive value proposition.
Ethan Genteman’s journey to founding Slingshot is a testament to the evolving landscape of insurance technology. Prior to his entrepreneurial leap, he served as the chief actuarial officer at the publicly traded Palomar Holdings, where he also spearheaded data initiatives. During his tenure, which began in 2019, Genteman played a pivotal role in building Palomar’s actuarial and data teams as the company expanded its offerings beyond earthquake insurance into other coverage types. This deep dive into the operational mechanics of insurance programs led him to question whether modern technology could significantly reduce the inherent costs. Approximately a year ago, he began coding and prototyping solutions in his basement, driven by a conviction that AI could unlock new efficiencies. His discussions with Rally Ventures commenced towards the end of 2023, culminating in his departure from Palomar on July 1 to dedicate himself fully to leading Slingshot.
Slingshot’s emergence with $27 million in seed funding marks a significant moment for the insurtech sector. By focusing on the often-overlooked segment of small, contextual policies and leveraging AI to streamline operations, the company is poised to make embedded insurance a profitable and scalable reality for vertical SaaS platforms. This approach not only provides new revenue streams for businesses but also enhances the customer experience by offering relevant protection at the point of purchase, ultimately making insurance more accessible and seamlessly integrated into daily life. With strong backing from strategic investors, a seasoned leadership team, and a clear vision to become a full-stack carrier, Slingshot is well-positioned to disrupt traditional insurance models and capitalize on the vast potential of the embedded finance revolution.
